An active volcano whose crater lakes shift between blue, turquoise, red and black — and change again over months and years.
Plan the sunriseKelimutu is a 1,639 m volcano in south-central Flores with three summit crater lakes of different colours, reached by a short walk from Moni before dawn.
Tiwu Ata Mbupu
Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai
Tiwu Ata Polo
The colours come from dissolved minerals and volcanic gas reacting at depth. They shift over months and years, so no photograph you have seen is a promise of what you will find.
Sunrise, hour by hour
Timings that put you on the rim before the light rather than during it.
Headlights through the forest, 30–40 minutes up to the summit car park.
Start the 1.5 km walk as it opens. Paved with long stair sections — bring a flashlight and a warm layer.
The highest point of the complex, with all three lakes below.
The show is not the sun but what it does to the water — the colours switch on one lake at a time.
Before mid-morning cloud builds over the summit. There is usually a coffee seller near the top.

The lakes hold their colours all day, so a daylight visit is a genuine option if a 03:15 departure is not. You trade the light, not the sight.

Tell us your dates and where you are coming from. We will set the base, the departure time and the driver so the light is not something you race.
