Maumere: Gateway of the East
Maumere is Flores’ second gateway and the natural start line for any Flores to Alor liveaboard: a relaxed harbor town with an airport (MOF, reached from Bali or Jakarta with a hop via Labuan Bajo or Kupang), a Portuguese-flavored hinterland and a bay with real diving history. Waiara, just east of town, hosted some of Indonesia’s earliest dive operations, and the bay’s reefs — badly hit by the 1992 earthquake — have spent three decades quietly growing back into dive sites worth the first two days of the route.
Arriving a day early is the smart play, and it is easily filled.
