Day by day

Two nights aboard, two inland

Sail first. You arrive rested, and the highlands are the right way to slow a trip down rather than start one.

  1. 01

    Day 1 · Board and sail

    Transfer and boarding mid-morning. Kelor Island, dragon trekking with a ranger on Rinca, and sunset at anchor as the flying foxes leave Kalong.

  2. 02

    Day 2 · Padar and Pink Beach

    The Padar ridge at first light, Pink Beach once the day boats have gone, and a drift over the mantas at Karang Makassar.

  3. 03

    Day 3 · Sandbar, then ashore

    Breakfast on the Taka Makassar sandbar, a last snorkel, and disembark in Labuan Bajo by early afternoon. Your driver-guide is on the dock.

  4. 04

    Day 4 · Up to Ruteng

    Out of the dry west coast into Manggarai country — around four hours of mountain driving, with the Cancar spider-web rice fields on the way up. Night in a hillside lodge above the terraces.

  5. 05

    Day 5 · Back down, or onward

    The morning in Ruteng, then back to Labuan Bajo for an afternoon flight — or carry on east toward Bajawa if you are extending.

Why the fourth day changes the trip

Everything in the first three days happens on water. The drive up to Ruteng is the first time Flores stops being a backdrop and becomes the place you are actually in.

The Cancar rice fields — cut in spider-web rings by an inheritance system rather than for the view — are the clearest signal that the island has its own logic, unrelated to the park behind you.

Five days cannot reach Kelimutu. If the crater lakes are the reason you are coming, the honest answer is seven days, not five.
