In short

The Flores Sea is calmest from April to October, which is the prime window for sailing, diving and the Trans-Flores road.

  • Dry season April–November
  • July–August: superb, busiest, book months ahead
  • Manta aggregations peak December–February
  • Shoulder months: same boats, emptier anchorages

Reef mantas are resident at Karang Makassar year-round. December to February is when the numbers peak, not when they arrive.

Green ridges above a sheltered bay in the wet season

What still works in the wet season

December to March brings the heaviest rain and the roughest water, and most eastern sea itineraries pause. That is the honest version.

What still works: Komodo itself, on shorter runs and with a flexible captain. Manta aggregations at the cleaning stations are at their strongest. And the park is genuinely quiet.

Rain here is usually a heavy afternoon rather than a grey week. Travellers who have been before sometimes choose these months deliberately, and are rarely disappointed.

Booking windows

When to actually book

The weather decides when to go. Availability decides when to ask.

July & August

Book six to nine months ahead. The boutique hulls — there are few of them — go first, and the best crews are committed early.

Shoulder months

Three to four months is usually comfortable for April–June and September–November, and you get more anchorage choice.

Wet season

Weeks rather than months. This is when a last-minute private charter is genuinely possible.

Festive dates

Christmas and New Year behave like peak season regardless of the weather. Treat them as July.
