Why Komodo Works So Well Without a Tank
Komodo National Park, off the western coast of Flores, concentrates its marine life unusually close to the surface. The same tidal currents that made the park famous among divers push nutrient-rich water over shallow reef tops, which is exactly where a snorkeler floats.
Three things follow from that. First, reef manta rays feed at or near the surface at Manta Point, so snorkelers regularly get longer encounters than divers hovering below. Second, the coral gardens at sites like Kanawa and Siaba Besar begin at one to three metres — no depth required. Third, turtles, reef sharks and schooling fish cruise the shallows around Pink Beach and Taka Makassar all day. The park entry ticket is the same for everyone: IDR 650.000 per person (dated ticket), arranged by your crew before departure.

Can Non-Divers Join a Komodo Liveaboard?
Yes — and on most departures you will not be the only one. Mixed groups are normal on scheduled phinisi trips: divers drop to the deeper pinnacles while snorkelers work the reef top from the same tender, and everyone is back on deck for the same lunch.
Two things are worth checking before you book, and our crew confirms both for every guest. First, that the route favours shallow-topped sites — Siaba Besar, Pink Beach, Taka Makassar — rather than deep-only pinnacles where snorkelers see mostly blue. Second, that a dedicated guide snorkels with the group instead of watching from the boat. Both are standard on the boats we operate; neither is standard across Labuan Bajo, so it is a fair question to ask any operator.
Seasons, Visibility and Water Temperature
The Flores Sea is at its calmest from April to October, which is also when visibility peaks — commonly 20 to 30 metres in July through September on the central and northern sites. Water stays warm year-round, roughly 25–29°C, so most guests snorkel comfortably in a rash guard rather than a wetsuit.
The wet months, December to March, bring shorter visibility of roughly 10 to 20 metres and occasional afternoon swell, but snorkeling continues on the sheltered sides of the islands — and Manta Point often rewards the season’s plankton-rich water with more feeding mantas. If your dates are fixed, we route around conditions; if they are flexible, aim for May to September.
What to Pack — and What Every Boat Provides
Masks, snorkels, fins and life jackets are included on every trip we run, sized on board before the first site. What you bring is mostly about comfort in the sun.
- Rash guard or swim shirt — the single most useful item; Komodo sun on a floating back is stronger than it feels.
- Reef-safe sunscreen — mineral formulas without oxybenzone or octinoxate, applied 20 minutes before entering the water.
- Your own mask (optional) — boat gear is maintained, but a personally fitted mask is worth its luggage space if you plan multiple days in the water.
- Dry bag — for phone, camera and park ticket on tender rides.
- Motion-sickness tablets — crossings between sites are short, but the tablets weigh nothing.
Beyond the Park: Snorkeling the North Flores Coast
Snorkeling-only travel in this region does not end at the park boundary. East along the north coast of Flores, the Riung 17 Islands marine park offers shallow reef flats, sandbars and far fewer boats — a natural extension for travelers combining Komodo with an overland or coastal route across Flores.
